The Internet Censorship Law in the United States Congress
I try to keep politics out of things, but I believe this case is relevant to this very blog. If this law passes I will probably shut Wota(in training) down. Mostly because I know I've linked or posted copyrighted content and not only could I be fined but I could also go to jail. Even doing a cover song of something on YouTube could send someone to jail. Major internet providers and websites like Tumblr and Google are trying to stop it but they are up against the film industry and record companies. If the link is too much of a pain let me know by email or in the comments and I will remove it. I just want to get the word out. I am still completely serious about shutting this blog down if it passes because I do not have the money to pay the fine.

I've been looking into that as well -- cause I sort of take a class on the idea of media law itself; funny how current events follow your curriculum around, huh?
ReplyDeleteI'll be very sad if I can't publish covers of vocaloid songs! D< But I guess it can't be helped, huh? I don't think it'll pass. I honestly don't.
Mina, before you do anything like shut a blog down, we should communicate in private. I was a practicing attorney for five years.
ReplyDeleteBut it would be kewl if we linked to something that urged people to contact the goobers in the US Congress and complain.

To get a little political- government will reflect the interests of capital unless the people take a stand. Right now capital is seeking to limit productivity because they cannot make money as we make nearly free perfect copies of media. Their laws are designed to keep cheap resources from the poor and make those that can afford it pay much more than is reasonably necessary so they can make profits.
USA's RIAA had help from Fed FBI and shut down MegaUpload.
ReplyDeleteIf SOPA passes, heaven help us all!
People in the USA WILL have a hard time getting TV shows from Japan and any other place internationally online from storage sites to torrent sites.
Bad things is that the SOPA bill will authorize US Government to seize/stop/control FOREIGN companies for copyright infringement, which is utter BS as the USA is overstepping their ground into international waters!
Worse things are that many foreign governments will probably Assist the USA and will also take the opportunity to pass their own version of SOPA and impose it on their citizens.
This nonsense will go global >:(
